Events
Events and calendars
Plan a get-together or a community event, see who's coming, and keep a calendar that works outside Welley too.
Events and calendars
Plan your own get-together or a group event, share the details and get responses. Keep a calendar you can use outside Welley.
-
Your own events
Create an event from your profile.
- Give it a name, a cover image and a description.
- Pick a start time and, if you like, an end time.
- Add a physical address, an online meeting link or both.
See all screensMy Events gathers the events you organize and the ones you're invited to, with a way to respond to each invitation. -
Group events
Put events right next to your group's channels and forum.
- Group events have their own event list and calendar.
- Group members with permission create events.
- Group administrators with permission to manage events can cancel or delete someone else's event.
Regular members can't create events by default. Only the organizer can edit an event. Group events don't support direct invitations.
See all screensA new group event starts with a cover, a name, a start time in a time zone, a place, and an online link if you want one. -
Who can see an event
Let anyone find it, share it by direct link, or limit who can see it.
- Personal events can be Public, Unlisted or Invite-only.
- Group events can be Public, Unlisted or Private.
- In a private group, only members can see its events.
Unlisted events can still show up in their event list and open from a link. They stay out of global discovery.
See all screensA personal event can be public, unlisted or invite-only. -
Invite specific people
Make a personal event invite-only when you want to control the guest list.
- The organizer picks who's invited.
- Invited people get controls on the event to answer the invitation.
- The event keeps an attendee list across participating servers.
Personal events support direct invitations. Group events don't. Invite-only limits who can access the event. It doesn't mean end-to-end encryption.
See all screensAn invite-only event goes to the people you pick. Only they can see the event and answer the invitation. -
Answer an invitation
Invited people can give a clear answer.
- Answer Going, Maybe going or Not going.
- See which invitations still need an answer.
- If you turn on that preference, My Events can include invitations you declined.
Someone who's invited answers Yes, No or Maybe. The organizer sees who's going. -
Interested or going
Say you're interested before you commit to an event.
- Event cards show interest and attendance separately.
- Open the event details to see attendee information.
- Event counts show how many people plan to go and how many are interested.
See all screensAn event page shows the time, place, description and host, and how many people are going or interested. -
Event discussions
Keep questions and replies with the event.
- Open the event discussion to post a question or reply.
- You can save drafts in the event discussion.
- Access to the discussion follows the event and group limits.
For invite-only events across servers, who gets a comment depends on the organizer, the post it replies to and which current attendees it explicitly mentions. Not every attendee is guaranteed to get the full thread.
Every event has its own discussion for questions and plans. -
Your event calendar
See events you created, joined or were invited to.
- Switch between upcoming and past events.
- Show all events, just your own, or invitations you haven't answered.
- The calendar view lists events by start time.
The Not responded filter only applies to personal events, since group events don't have direct invitations.
My Events gathers the events you organize and the ones you're invited to, with a way to respond to each invitation. -
Event inbox
Keep up with events from the people or groups you follow.
- Your personal Inbox shows eligible events from people you follow.
- The group Inbox keeps group events in a separate place.
- Unread counts and seen markers help you spot new events.
The Following view gathers public events from the people you follow. -
Discover public events
Find public events beyond the profiles you already follow.
- Discover is part of your personal events area.
- Discover follows event visibility and group discovery rules.
- Discover doesn't make private or invite-only events public.
Discover searches public events beyond the people you follow. Invite-only and private events don't show up there. -
Add an event to your calendar
Download one event as a standard iCalendar file.
- Each supported personal or group event has an ICS download link.
- Open the file in a calendar app that accepts iCalendar files.
From the organizer menu you can delete an event, copy it as a new one or download it as an iCalendar file. -
Subscribe from another calendar
Use a calendar link for a profile or group that stays the same.
- Public calendar links share events according to the export settings.
- Private subscription links use a unique, secret address.
- Make a new private link, and the old address stops working.
Anyone who has a private calendar URL can read what it exports, so keep that URL secret.
With a public calendar link, any calendar app can subscribe to your events. A private link uses a secret address that you can regenerate. -
Time zones
Show event times along with the time zone that matters.
- The event form saves the event's time zone.
- When the event's time zone is different from your local time, dates point that out.
See all screensA personal event gets a name, a cover, a start time with its time zone, a place, an optional online link and a description. -
Copy or cancel an event
Copy an event for a new occasion, or clearly mark it as canceled.
- Copy as new reuses the details and safely copies the cover image.
- The organizer can edit or cancel an event as long as they still have access.
- Canceled events show a grayscale cover on their cards and details.
Recurring events aren't available. Copy as new creates a separate event.
See all screensThe organizer confirms the cancellation. A canceled event stays visible with a gray cover. -
Events over ActivityPub
Welley sends and receives standard ActivityPub Event objects.
- An Event object includes the organizer, name, description, time and supported location details.
- Updates to public events, and cancellations, can sync across participating servers.
- Supported event interactions use ActivityPub activities.
The other service decides how it shows an Event and which interactions it supports. Not every app has a full event interface.
For a public event, people can say they're interested or that they're going. The page counts both. -
Connect with event software
Because Welley supports ActivityPub Events, it can connect to event services such as Mobilizon.
- Welley reads remote Event objects instead of treating every event as an ordinary post.
- Welley handles supported variations in event data from other servers.
- Standard iCalendar exports are another way to connect with calendar software.
This compatibility comes from shared standards. Specific Mobilizon workflows, group permissions and invitation flows can work differently.
For a public event, people can say they're interested or that they're going. The page counts both.
