AI policy
Our AI policy
People use the word AI for a lot of different things, so we want to be specific about where we stand.

What we mean by AI
On this page, AI means the AI models Welley can connect to. They can run a bot, help you write, make images or power AI search.
Your content isn't AI training data
We don't train AI models on anything you share on our servers, including your posts, messages and photos. We also don't sell or license your content to anyone for AI training.
Some features only work by sending content to an AI model. A group's AI bot reads the messages it answers, and AI search reads the posts it indexes. That content goes to the AI provider the server's operator picked, and that provider's own terms apply to it.
Anyone can read what you post publicly, including crawlers we don't control. Public posts can also reach other Fediverse servers, and those servers have their own rules. To keep a post out of reach, pick a smaller audience for it.
AI features in Welley
Welley can connect to AI providers. That's what runs AI bots, writing help, image generation and AI search. None of it works until a server's operator connects a provider and turns on a model.
The operator decides which AI tools people can use, and can set limits for each person.
A group's admins decide whether the group has AI bots. They create each bot themselves and choose what it may do. We provide the tools, and we don't add bots to anyone's group. A bot can only do what it has permission to do. It can help moderators with reports and notes, but it doesn't take over moderation on its own.
Welley marks AI bots and automated accounts as bots, so you know when you're talking to one.
Rules for AI on our servers
- You're welcome to post things you made with AI tools. The rest of the server rules apply to them the same way.
- An account that posts automatically has to be marked as a bot.
- Don't use AI to pass yourself off as someone else. Don't post fake photos, videos or voice recordings of a real person without their consent.
If you see something that breaks these rules, report it, and our moderators will handle it like any other report. We assume good faith. If you made an honest mistake, we'll help you fix it. If you're not sure whether something is OK, ask in Welley Help.
These rules are for our own Welley servers, such as welley.social. Anyone can run a Welley server, and each one picks its own AI providers and rules.
How we use AI ourselves
We use AI in our own work too, and we'd like you to know where.
- We translate Welley and this website with AI help.
- Some of the illustrations on this website may be made with AI help.
- The people in our screenshots aren't real, and AI made their profile photos.
- AI agents help us sort bug reports, look into problems, write reports and review code.
- Our developers decide for themselves whether to use AI when they write code. Most of the Welley platform and its apps are written by hand.
- A person on our team carefully reviews every change before it becomes part of Welley, however it was written.
Changes to this policy
AI is changing fast, and this policy will change with it. We'll review it at least once a year, and the date of the last change is at the top of this page. Tell us what you think in Welley Help, our public support group on welley.social.
